Is seen a lot of comments recently that Riley Matthews isn’t acting like herself, that her behavior & outing of Mayas feelings is completely OOC. However, I could not disagree more. After studying the episodes, I’ve come to the conclusion that Riley Matthews isn’t happy at all.

This girl might even suffer from depression.

I know you might think my theory comes out of nowhere. Like, why would Riley Matthews of all people suffer from depression.

Factor one: Her parents.
Being raised by the perfect pair of parents isn’t always easy. Especially if or when they are pushing you. Pushing you to be the best version of yourself, all the time. To always do the right thing, and if you do even the slightest thing wrong, you know the world could just crumble.

Factor two: Her best friend.
It’s been clear since the pilot that Riley admires Maya for the way she is. She wants to be like her, she tries to be like her. Maybe because she’s not that sure about who she is? Or maybe she doesn’t like who she is?

Factor three: Talent.
“Who cares about me? I stink.” Those words hit me hard. I don’t think Riley has found something she think she’s talented at. She may be a good friend and a heart of gold, but when your friends are all good at something on paper, or an activity, you might feel like you’re worthless.

Factor five: Lucas.
I think he was the breaking point. Once Riley found out Maya liked Lucas, everything changed. It’s not silly. It’s not about being in love with the concept. Riley really likes Lucas. And she thought that he liked her. But now she has convinced herself that he doesn’t. And that tears her apart.

People who are depressed, often put on a front, and act silly, lovely and happy. So I won’t rule this out. I think it might actually be a possibility.
